Winter Sports Tournament Preview

We are approaching the business end of the winter sports season with many of our teams vying for local championships and pushing for higher honours during our traditional winter tournaments across the country. We will see more than 130 of our students from 15 teams represent the school at five National or Northern tournaments from 28th August – 12th September. These are the pinnacle events on our annual sports calendar and they are a terrific opportunity for our top sports teams to represent the school at the highest level.

Junior Basketball

Our Junior A Boys and Girls Basketball teams have been tracking very well in the Counties Manukau Junior A Grades this season. Both teams have cemented their place in the top two and have qualified for the Greater Auckland Championships despite there being one more round of games to be played. The Junior Girls play their final against Manurewa High School at 5.00pm on Tuesday 27 July and the Boys play Mission Heights Junior College at 6.30pm on Thursday 29 July. Both games at Bruce Pulman Arena, Takanini.

Football Tournament

After weeks of training, 14 Year 8 boys travelled to St Kentigern College at the end of May to compete in the annual South Eastern Zone football tournament against 12 other schools.

The morning started off with two back-to-back games in pool play. A tough first game against St Kentigern resulted in a 3-2 loss. Our boys came back strong in their next match, taking out a 4-0 win over Sir Edmund Hillary. This result saw them progress through to the playoff round, where they met powerhouse Somerville Intermediate in the quarterfinal.

At the conclusion of their playoff games, our Sancta Maria College boys finished 7th equal overall to cap off a thoroughly enjoyable day. A massive thank you to Mr Simon Kay for coaching the boys and making it all possible.

Weightlifting

On Saturday 22 May, students Brooke Gallagher and Olivia Selemaia competed in the inaugural Auckland Secondary Schools Weightlifting Championships against 50 other students from 20 schools. Olivia was our top performer on the day thanks to winning the 15-16-Year old Grade and was named the “Overall Top Female” of the competition which in itself was a huge achievement.

Brooke and Olivia will look to stake their claim as the best Secondary School weightlifters in the country when they compete at the 2021 NZSS Olympic Weightlifting Championships on Saturday 4 September in Hamilton.

Cross Country

The school’s annual Cross-Country House event was held on Thursday 17 June where the whole school came together for a fun afternoon of running and walking through soggy terrain with fine conditions. Participation was good with more than 600 students and some staff getting involved. The overall winning House was Waitemata who receive 4 points towards the 2021 Whanau House Competition. Runner up was Kororareka with Hokianga and Akaroa coming in 3rd and 4th respectively. Congratulations to the following individuals who won their grades:
