Sports Round Up

School Cross Country

It has been an exciting start to Term 3 in Sport. In the very first week of the term, we hosted our annual cross-country event for our Year 7-10s. The event was perfectly blessed with sunshine and our students showed great participation on the day. The day wouldn’t be possible without the help of teachers and staff members: a special thanks to everyone that assisted.

Hokianga won the event with 790 points followed by Waitematā on 670 points, Akaroa on 560 points and Kororāreka on 310 points.  Our Year 7 & 8 selected students then represented the school in the South Eastern Zone Cross Country held on Thursday 15 August at Barry Curtis Park.

SEZ Netball

Week 2 and the Sports Department focused their time on the Year 7 & 8 South Eastern Zone Netball tournament. The tournament is organised by Sancta Maria College and boasts over 40 schools that compete throughout the day. The event was a major success, and all schools lauded the efforts of our organisers.

All our Sancta Maria College teams did well at the tournament, with Year 7 Boys placing second and Year 7 Girls B Grade finishing third. With this placing our Year 7 Boys qualified for AAIMS Tournament, against all other zone qualifications, with the tournament held on 27 August.

Combined Points Netball Tournament

Week 3 was another happening week for sport at Sancta Maria College. Our Year 9, 10 and Premier Netball teams competed in the Combined Points Tournament hosted by Auckland Netball Centre. The tournament draws top teams from all around Upper North Island and is a great development opportunity for all our teams. It is the perfect tournament scenario for our Premier Girls Netball, heading into UNISS in week 7. We had some games go our way and some not, but the girls were proud of their performances and enjoyed the day.

Pre-AIMS Rugby Sevens

AIMS Rugby Sevens also had their first hit out in a Pre-AIMS Rugby Sevens Tournament organised by Counties Manukau Rugby. They played four games throughout the day and learnt lots as the day progressed. The results didn’t go our way but the six tries we scored throughout the day were great. The gritty performances shown by the boys as first timers was also well acknowledged by the opposing teams. Preparation is well underway for AIMS tournament which is later this term.

Basketball Season

The best of the performances came from our Basketball Teams. Our Premier Boys and Junior Girls Tigers won the Counties Manukau season, both beating Aorere College in the finals putting them as top seed qualification into Basketball Auckland Champs. Our Boys U17 Cobras also qualified to Auckland Champs after a second place finish in the Counties Manukau season. Premier Girls also had a commendable season finishing third in Counties Manukau. The qualified teams worked hard towards Auckland Championship Tournament held on 15 & 16 August 2024, with the following results:

  • Junior girls finished third in group
  • U17 Boys finished third in group
  • Prems finished fourth in group
