Supporting Our Students’ Mental Well-Being

As we navigate through these challenging times, it has become increasingly evident that the mental well-being of our students is of paramount importance.

We have observed a growing number of students seeking support for mental health concerns, and we believe it is crucial to address this collectively as a community.

Recognising the Signs

It is essential for parents to be aware of the tell-tale signs that may indicate a child is struggling with their mental health. Some of these signs include:

  • Changes in Mood: Look for prolonged sadness, irritability, or mood swings.
  • Withdrawal: Noticeable withdrawal from friends, family, and activities they once enjoyed.
  • Changes in Sleep Patterns: Difficulty sleeping, frequent nightmares, or excessive sleeping.
  • Academic Performance: A sudden decline in grades or a lack of interest in schoolwork.
  • Physical Symptoms: Unexplained headaches, stomachaches, or other physical complaints.
  • Behavioural Changes: Increased aggression, defiance, or risky behaviours.

How Parents Can Help

There are several practices parents can adopt to support their children’s mental well-being:

  1. Open Communication: Encourage open and honest conversations about feelings and experiences. Let your child know it’s okay to talk about their emotions.
  2. Routine and Structure: Maintain a consistent daily routine to provide a sense of stability and security.
  3. Healthy Lifestyle: Promote a balanced diet, regular exercise, and adequate sleep.
  4. Limit Screen Time: Encourage activities that do not involve screens, such as reading, outdoor play, or hobbies.
  5. Model Healthy Behaviours: Demonstrate healthy coping mechanisms and stress management techniques.
  6. Seek Professional Help: If you notice persistent signs of distress, do not hesitate to seek support from mental health professionals.
