Co-Curricular Update

Music
The Sheng Mali Chamber trio (Ceron Zheng: Violin, Liam Wu: Piano, Tomaz Zheng: Cello) attended a Chamber Workshop at Auckland University on 1 & 3 May 2026, in preparation for the New Zealand National Chamber Music Contest and representing Sancta Maria College.

Sancta Maria College returns to the NZCT National Chamber Music contest for the first time since 2019 with the Sheng Mali Chamber Trio (mentioned above), who also attended a Chamber Music Workshop at the Auckland University, Arts Faculty, which was organised by IRMTNZ in preparation for the NZCT Chamber Music Contest.  This is a classical music competition held annually in New Zealand for performers up to 19 years old who are at primary or secondary school, where over 300 ensembles and thousands of students across the country participate. Groups of 3-8 students perform regional rounds, a National Semi Final and a National Final.

At this Chamber Music Workshop our very own “Sheng Mali” trio received a 1 hour personalised coaching session on Friday 1 May from top professional musician Ingrid Culliford and they also performed in a concert at Auckland University on Sunday 3 May with all chamber groups involved in the workshop.

We wish Ceron, Lian and Tomaz all the best for their upcoming chamber music competition in June, and we are very proud of their dedication and hard work.

In the April school holidays, Joanna Ma travelled to New Plymouth to represent Sancta Maria College at the North Island Secondary School Orienteering Championships. The Sprint event took place at the campuses of Spotswood Primary, Te Pi’ipi’inga Kākano Mai Rangiātea – Kura Kaupapa Māori, and Spotswood College.

Joanna ran over a 1.7km course against competitors from across the North Island, including Auckland, Bay of Plenty and Taranaki. Over 300 Orienteers were involved in the Sprint event. Well done, Joanna!
