Sancta Maria College Service Programme
Catholic call to serve:
“Whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant.”
Matthew 20:26
This programme sits with our Catholic Faith with service a central virtue of our school. All students should complete the following annual service hours. These are acknowledged publicly in assembly, through prizegiving awards, and through a range of badges.
- Member Pin: 5 hours of volunteering – by end of Yr 8
- Bronze Pin: 32 hours of volunteering – by end of Yr 10
- Silver Pin: 250 hours of volunteering – by end of Yr 13
- Gold Pin: 500 hours of volunteering – Superstars!!!
Since SMC Service started last year, 915 Sancta Maria College students registered including last year’s Year 13s. Overall, 4311 hours of volunteer service have been logged and 287 students have logged hours in the last 6 months.
Students can look to serve in our school community, in their parish, or in the wider community. Service examples include:
- Managing AV in church, being an altar server, lector, or any other voluntary role
- Picking up rubbish
- Kaitiakitanga opportunities like tree planting or pest control (fun activity to do as a whānau)
- Marshalling or volunteer work at events such as Rotary Fun Run
- Howick Youth Council
The following activities (and similar activities) are NOT considered for service hours:
- Family chores or duties
- Anything you are paid or compensated for doing
- 40 Hour Famine is not 40 hours of service activities
- Participating in a club or sport or co-curricular activity (like music or performance)
