Our Music Department have certainly started the year with their Jazz Camp which was mid-February and saw many of our students immersed into their new and old musical instruments over the weekend, in preparation for the National Youth Jazz Competition.
To help give our students some time on the stage, two Warm-Up concerts were organised at the beginning of April, also in preparation for the National Youth Jazz Competition, which took place on Monday 7 April. And in true style, the results are already in, and we gained the following:
In the Big Band category, our Big Band won a gold medal and Stage Band a bronze.
Our four combos earned the following:
- Mom’s Spaghetti – silver
- Big Kahuna Burger – silver
- Royale with Cheese – bronze
- Pan Galactic Gargle Blaster – emerging
We are very proud of all the achievements and a special congratulations to our Big and Stage Band for the medal winning performances.
We would also like to acknowledge the contribution, expertise, professionalism and kindness that our outgoing Head of Department, Mr Stuart Gibbs, has given the school over his 12-year tenure with us. His contributions to the success of our students’ music development and careers were no more evident in his last concert for the school, when the students orchestrated and performed a fond ‘Jellyfish’ song as a fitting tribute to his mana within the school. He will be sorely missed and fondly remembered – we wish him well in his next move down country.
