St Luke’s Church Opening

It was a joyous day for the St Luke’s Parish on Saturday 1st May 2021 as their new church was officially opened. An estimated 1,500-strong congregation turned out to witness this historic event.

The Mass was officiated by Bishop Patrick Dunn DD, Bishop of Auckland, and Auxiliary Bishop Michael Gielen. Sancta Maria College students were in attendance and the celebration included the powhiri led by Sancta Maria’s kapa haka group combined with primary and college students. This was organised by leaders Girlie Ruki and Ben Bacon.

The journey of the St Luke’s Catholic Church began 14 years ago when it was led by the first parish priest Father Ezio Blasoni SM. As the congregation grew, services moved from the chapel on Sancta Maria College grounds to the school auditorium.

Sancta Maria College has a special relationship with St Luke’s Parish and community. We have been honoured to participate in ongoing fundraising towards the grand piano that now has pride of place within the church.
