Senior School Update

Sancta Maria College Senior School Ball

The Senior School Ball was a wonderful evening for our Year 12 and 13 students. A huge thank you to all students on the Ball Committee, and to Mr Ardern, Year 13 Dean, for their organisation of this amazing event. Please see photographs of the event via News Centre.

NCEA Scholarship

Tutorials are now underway for NCEA Scholarship for our most capable Year 12 and 13 students. If your child is not involved and would like to be, please get in touch with their subject teacher. Almost all of our senior subjects offer the opportunity for Scholarship level study.

NCEA Information

A quick reminder that NCEA information can be found on our website: https://www.sanctamaria.school.nz/academic/. Please familiarise yourself with the information about extensions and appeals on this page.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Assessment at Sancta Maria College

AI is an exciting emergent technology. While teachers may engage with it in classroom activities, it should not be used for assessment tasks. We use the software Turnitin to detect plagiarism and AI use from Year 9 onward.

The most common incidents of AI use in assessment have been to write content (e.g. ChatGPT), using it to paraphrase the work of others (e.g. QuillBot), and using an editor to rephrase and enhance writing (e.g. Grammarly). While Grammarly can be used to help improve some basic spelling and grammar use, it cannot be used to rephrase or edit large portions of assessments in order to ‘enhance’ the submission.

NCEA Pilots

Parents of Year 11 learners will now be familiar with the new NCEA standards through our Pilot subjects of Religious Education, Mathematics and Statistics, and Japanese. Our teachers are working tirelessly through these new standards and are reporting positively about the increase in teaching and learning time that has occurred as a result of this refresh.

Please note that due to the unusual moderation requirements of Pilot subjects, internal assessment results cannot be confirmed until NZQA have moderated the standard across all Pilot schools nationally. To give you an idea of your child’s progress in the meantime, we have posted provisional results. However, please be aware that these may be subject to change.
