Wellbeing and Pastoral Care Update

House System in more detail

As a College, we want to foster stronger house affiliation and connection within houses and we want all members of the College to feel connected to their house and know its significance to the school. This is reflected in the House Prefect appointments for 2023, as well as looking at how we can build a strong foundation (a sense of whanaungatanga and turangawaewae). We also want to build relationships through the year levels and across the school.  As a result, we will be operating on a three-week cycle of assemblies: full school, house and year level, as per the cycle below:

Week 1 – Full School Assembly – Tuesday

Week 2 – House Assembly

Monday – Akaroa
Tuesday – Hokianga
Wednesday – Kororāreka
Thursday – Waitematā

Week 3 – Year level assemblies

In addition to assemblies, we are also wanting to embed the house system within any whole school activities, like we did at Athletics Day, so that each student has the opportunity to display their house colours and compete within houses as well as individually.

School Pōwhiri
It was a pleasure to start another year altogether with a Mihi Whakatau to welcome all the new students and staff of 2023 to our school community.
Our Wāhine toa brought the manuhiri (new students and staff) into the Auditorium with a beautiful karanga where they were warmly welcomed by the Tangata whenua (our SLT, Senior staff and remaining Kapa Haka students) with a Karakia, Haka Pōwhiri, Waiata, Whaikōrero and Harirū.

Thank you to everyone who contributed to this year’s Welcome.
Spirit Week was celebrated during Week 3, leading up to our Athletics Day, which gave our students the opportunity to connect within their houses and to compete against other in multiple activities arranged during interval and lunchtimes.  It was a lovely week of fun with an overarching feeling of ‘spirit’ within the school.  Click the following link for more detail Spirit Week Kicks off House Competition | Sancta Maria College
Athletics Day
This year we celebrated our annual Athletics Day with a beautifully sunny day, overseen by our House Leaders.  Thanks to all of our staff who organised and managed the day’s activities to make it a special whole school event.
